Bargain Bin - Primal Passion

My Sunday trip out shopping for games on the cheap took me to KMart where I usually never find anything. This time I picked up a gem called Primal for $9.99. I've been playing it ever since I got it. It is pure gothy goodness. You play as female character Jen who is astral traveling in a realm called Oblivion. While there she can shape-shift into various powerful demon aspects of the four elements. Her companion is of all things a gargoyle. The voice acting is excellent. Hudson Leik who was Calisto on Xena WP does Jen. The gargoyle is voiced by the actor who performed as the long winded alien Jackar on Babylon 5.

The scenery is fabulous. It is a bit dark and mysterious, and there are big statues and well drawn buildings. You get to collect jewels and Tarot cards as pick ups. The game engine unfortunately leaves much to be desired. The controls for the gargoyle Scree are clunky and sometimes just plain don't work. He can jump up on a wall in some places and in others he can't get over a curb. The biggest criticism that I have on this game is that there isn't a jump button for either character! That is an almost fatal flaw. The readily available cheat codes at Game Spot and PS2 Now make it much easier to just acquire all the Tarot cards so that the frustrating controls for Scree no longer matter. The game gets better as time goes on. Jen picks up new skills that make her better stronger and faster. As often happens the programmers get more skilled as they get deeper into the game. On the whole I like it and it is a refreshing break from the more psychologically dramatic survival horror games.
