Games Your Grandma Used to Play
Posted by Geekwoman

If you played Commodore 64 back in the proverbial day, like I did then you
might remember Epyx software. The company was responsible for a string of
huge hits, relatively for those times. Titles included Summer Games,
California Games, Pitstop, Gateway to Apshai and Impossible Mission. There
was my personal all time favorite called The Dragon Riders of Pern which
was first released for the Atari and Commodore 64 in 1983. Pern's
population inhabited strongholds and Weyrs. The gameplay included RTS
commerce, crafters, and dragon-raising. You played the representative of
an important Weyr, and your twofold task was to win the confidence of the
others through negotiation. As well as defending the planet by riding
dragons with fiery breath weapons. It was this action / strategy RPG
hybrid that spawned other games such as Drakan. And it was an influence
for the many RTS games that followed it.
Ironstone Partners recognized the potential in these old school games. It
has licensed the rights to re-release them on handsets (as well as those
direct-to-TV gaming rigs) from Epyx. "The Epyx catalogue contains some
truly great games that we know work very well on many new platforms," says
Darren Melbourne the Creative Director of Ironstone Partners. "We have
already made great strides on the mobile and Direct to TV incarnations of
some of the best." I would love to see a reincarnation of Dragon Riders,
and I am sure a host of fans would shell out for it too. Hey Epyx - we're
still here.
