Move over Cujo
Haunting Ground is a recently released and overlooked survival horror game that appeals to me. You begin the game as Fiona, an 18 year old girl. The story line is somewhat derivative of Silent Hill. But one does need something to do while waiting for the next edition in the SH series which is only rumored to be be in development. One website claims that they are hiring for the team. Anyway, in Haunting Ground your character awakes to find that she just survived a tragic car accident that has killed her parents. She also wakes up nude and caged in an old castle. She finds clues that eventually explain that she is the heiress of the mysterious castle upon her parents’ death. My favorite thing about this game is the bond that forms between her and the heroic white shepherd dog named Hewie who has also been trapped in the castle. She saves him from the shackles that imprison him. Instantly they become soul mates. Yes the high priestess of hack and slash Geek Woman does have a soft spot - for canines.

Fiona is a physically weak character it is wit and cunning that is needed for the puzzles. As players develop trust and foster their relationship with Hewie in an ingame trust factor as was found in The Thing he becomes more willing to help Fiona. He uses his heightened sense of smell to locate items, utilizes his smaller size to access hard to reach areas and attacks or distracts enemies. Many games have the pounding heartbeat dual shock, which is effective. Some of the best survival horror games have the touch of a Japanese master. The Cinematics in this game are directed by Naoto Takenaka. Don't hesitate to pick this one up, and don't forget to give your dog a bone today! [Screens]
