Too Much Information!
Posted by Geek Woman
Do you play games to get away from it all? Do you like the escapism it
offers you as a way to relax? Those days may be gone. Imagine strolling
along in your favorite MMORPG enjoying the ambient scenery, the birds are
chirping a light breeze is blowing - you round a corner and encounter a
... billboard!? At the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco earlier
today it was announced by Massive Incorporated that it now has agreements
with 10 of the leading videogame publishers in the world. They are the the
world's first video game advertising network. They propose to add a total
of 40 titles to their 'dynamic in-game advertising network'. TV
advertisers don't want to relinquish their mind control of "the elusive 18
to 34 year-old male gamer audience". Not only is that unwelcome news but
it is also sexist.
The first title to be subjected to stealth advertising methods will be
"Splinter Cell Chaos Theory" from Ubisoft. The ads are said to appear in
games on billboards, posters, and other advertising elements.
"Brand marketers can tap into the nation's largest entertainment
industry using a familiar model that is similar to purchasing television
advertising... Massive makes reaching the gaming audience easy."
It was Alvin Toffler who made the first early warning about
"information fatigue syndrome" more than 30 years ago in his trailblazing
book Future Shock. All types of stress is made worse by “data smog”, the
proliferation of advertising that is literally everywhere.
