_____________________________________________________________INTERVIEW
[LadyGamers]: First off, can you let us know some
history of ShallowGrave? How it began, why it started, when it was founded,
and who were the founders?
[Nothing]: It all began with Torak
hyping Natural Selection to anyone who would listen for weeks. He was a
good catalyst for getting the ball rolling on a lot of the DN guys (supertron,
mercy, killa, isis) and myself.
We started playing a whole bunch, and supertron wanted to assemble a
team to play more competitively. First it was the DN guys and me, and we
recruited the most skilled guys we spotted on GotRice.
The original lineup was supertron (team leader), me (nothing), killa,
isis, mercy, glowskull, kickass00, and davion. glow, kickass, and davion
all drifted away for various reasons. but round the time when our ranks
were getting thin, XP dissolved their NS squad, so we picked up torak and
kiowa. That's pretty much where the team stands right now.
[LadyGamers]: Since you have deep incite into the whole
Natural Selection community, could you fill us all with details about what
it's like being a gamer in this alien world? Is there anything different
you find in the NS community compared to the other FPS related
communities?
[Nothing]: Hmm this one's a tough one for me to
answer, mainly because I'm not too familiar with any other FPS
communities. The thing that's notable is that NS really requires teamwork.
You can have a team with amazing skill, but you will get beaten by less
skilled teams if you do not develop strong strategies and work together
very well. The community in terms of teams/clans has been very chaotic.
Lots of teams have split, merged, or been absorbed by other teams. Part of
that is because teamwork is so important, that if team chemistry is not
there a team cannot be successful. Another part is that the game has
stagnated in the months since the last patch was released, and a lot of
players have lost interest.
The main developer, who goes by Flayra, is very interested in making the
game great for both pub and competitive players. It's really nice to see
the type of interaction that goes on in the official NS boards between the
development team and the players.
[LadyGamers]: There are a
handful of people who feel you're just one of a kind all around cool guy.
From looking at your picture, I can see why the girls would find you a
cutiepie, but what about gamers in general? What do you feel you have done
to cause so many people to enjoy being around you?
[Nothing]: Haha wow that's very flattering. Hmm, I
guess I just try to be a good friend. Sometimes my temper gets the best of
me (especially when I'm frustrated, ask my teammates heh) but my main goal
is to have a good time, and to help people around me do the same, both in
games and out.
For my friends -- I've been very lucky to meet a lot of nice people,
people who are just fun to be around. So if there's some way for me to
return the kindness visited upon me, I'm happy to do what I can.
As far as gamers in general, I really like being part of a team. I love
playing team sports, and that feeling of loyalty and comradery really
transfers over to online games. Doesn't really matter to me if you're on
my team or not, if you're a team player I'll give you the respect you
deserve.
[LadyGamers]: With the hype
on Half-Life 2 at E3 this year, did the game swoon you like it did the
rest of us?
[Nothing]: To be honest, I'm not exactly a
cutting-edge gamer. If my friends give me the heads up on something fun,
I'll check it out, but I don't follow the new release
news/screenshots/previews too heavily.
You know, I just started playing CS this week. Heh I guess I'm just a
little bit behind the times. The only thing that's really caught my eye
lately is Doom3. I really like the way the screens have looked so far, I
love that dark and creepy atmosphere. It's part of what initially drew me
to NS.
[LadyGamers]: There's a new virtual world called
There.com that's pretty hot right
now, it's in beta testing mode still. You being an IRC idler, would you
ever consider such a gaming life? -or- Would you prefer just plain text
like IRC for chatting... leave virtual world stuff to the games?
[Nothing]: I remember I took a peek at that site a
while back, I think I saw it posted on memepool.com. To be honest I'm kind
of a geeky coder minimalist. I'm not a big fan of graphical interfaces -
not to the command-line-text-only extreme some people go to, but for
example I really can't stand flash as a web site interface.
So those who know me (especially isis heh) won't be surprised to hear
that I'd prefer the IRC text style over the virtual-world style presented
by There.com. I won't even use AIM because I can't get it to be bare-bones
enough in its display settings.
Still, I can see the novelty in the There.com approach - being able to
have an embodiment of your personality representing you instead of just a
name.
