[LadyGamers]: PlanetQuake has been around for so many
years now. Do you think you could describe the history about the site? I
know Fargo was the main guy for most of the Quake 1 and Quake 2 days.
Before Bluesnews.com was born, wasn’t Stephen ‘Blue’ Heaslip one of the
founders as well? [Rick Bassett]: If you want a real
history lesson on PlanetQuake, check out the two and four
year
anniversary
pieces and
here. From memory, Bastard started it all and brought Fargo,
Blue and more on. Blues News was alive first and he was Site Director on PQ for
a while. PlanetQuake turned six and it's seen
quite a few people you now know either at GameSpy or in other areas of the
online gaming scene.
Bastard,
Fargo, Blue, Gestalt, Lowtax and Hellchick are still strong names around these
parts.
[LadyGamers]:
Time after time you’ll see people in the forums say that they want id Software
to create Quake 4. What do you feel about the situation?
[Rick Bassett]: From the way I've
seen id handle "farming out" titles, I'm not too sure we can say id
Software isn't making
the game. Raven is making it, but id is going to be very tight throughout
development in the roll of producer. Wolfenstein was a great example of the way
id Software is expanding the kind of games we get from their roots. It works for me.
[LadyGamers]:
Are there any other genre you enjoy playing besides action related games?
[Rick Bassett]: Games, I'm pretty
hardcore action centered and even more so with FPS. I enjoy other types of games
but they just take so much time that I don't have. I really would have liked to
get Black & White done, but I couldn't so I shipped it to Jube, she loves it,
that Sim freak. :-)
[LadyGamers]: PlanetQuake’s old webmaster,
Hellchick, moved on to Activision almost a year
ago. Do you miss those days when you both were a team to run the site?
[Rick Bassett]: Odd you should ask,
those were some of my best times on PlanetQuake. She was creative and dealt with
the "crap" that pops up in the community, and I worked on News and Hosting. We
were always "on it" and really worked very well together. Very fluid. Quake III
was fresh and there was dew on the fields...such fond memories.
[LadyGamers]: I
noticed a picture of you at Quakecon with your wife and Hellchick this year. Did
you see anything exciting while you were there? Did you happen to run into any
of your online friends?
[Rick Bassett]: We met so many
people it was just amazing! People from Quake-Eternal made and brought me one of
their group shirts and it's my favourite shirt from the event. Some lady gave us
brownies 'cause I gave her a shirt (Wolf I think), just amazing family feel down
there, but the best had to be Ms. Donna, the id Software mom. She took the time to stop
and chat with my wife and I for at least half an hour and my face hurt from
grinning and laughing. She's a real gem.
So yeah, it was
amazing and the best event I've ever seen myself. So many old friends, so many
new ones!
BTW, my wife had
lots of playtime in on the computer we gave away, while I got under ten minutes
through the whole event. No wonder she ownz me.
