[LadyGamers]: AngelMapper was founded in June
2000. What caused you to create your own website? Who were you hosted by?
When you put your maps up online did you realize that years later you'd be
a hot spot where everyone goes to download some awesome stylish maps? Also
how did you come up with your nick name which is the site's name.
[Angel Mapper]: I made my own website as a
portfolio of my level design so that I could get a job making games, and
to tell people a little about the places I've been and the things I've
seen. :) I also started writing tutorials for the Unreal Editor last year,
so I've been posting them up on my site as well. I came up with the nick
Angel Mapper because I love collecting anything that has to do with
angels. :)
[LadyGamers]: You work for Secret Level, a company known for Star
Wars Starfighter and much more. Can you give us a little background on how
you started with them? Are you able to speak about the game you're
currently working on? If you can't mention the game, can you tell us if
it's a PC title or will it be on a console platform?
[Angel Mapper]: CliffyB at Epic took notice of my work and
gave me a referral at Secret Level in June, a few days later I got an
email from them and started doing remote contract work the next week. Last
month they hired me on as a full time employee, so I moved down here to
San Francisco and have been loving it ever since. :D I'm not allowed to
tell people what game I'm working on until it's officially announced, all
I can say is it's a PS2 game using the Unreal engine.
[LadyGamers]: You started level designing with the Half-Life
editor WorldCraft in 1999, then moved on to Unreal Tournament level editor
in 2000. Since you had an Unreal 1 gaming background what caused you to
create Half Life maps instead? Was the original Unreal game too hard for a
beginner?
[Angel Mapper]: No, it was just that Half Life was the
first game that I got the editor to work. ;) I started with first person
shooters with Goldeneye for the N64 and have been addicted ever since.
Once I found out that Half Life came with the level editor I went out and
got it, then once I bought UT and got its editor to work I've been with
the Unreal engine ever since.
[LadyGamers]: What steps do you take when creating a map, from
inception to completion? How long can that process take? How do you come
up with such awesome map creativity?
[Angel Mapper]: Most of the time I come up with the
concept first, like what location I want the map to be in or what gimmick
I want to use. Sometimes I get my ideas out of books on architecture, but
most of the time I'm just making stuff up as I go along. :P
[LadyGamers]: We happen to be honored to get you the month
of your birthday. Do you have any plans set already? Are you going to play
game all night till you drop? Or does it always happen each year on your
birthday where you end up having ideas for an awesome new map?
[Angel Mapper]: My boyfriend is flying out from Chicago,
we're going to lock ourselves in my apartment for the weekend. ;)
