"A little history……… I caught up with [TBLM]Airamis77, one of the originators of the tourney, and got a quick interview with him. [BiTTeR_IvY]: How and when did you get your start in Quake 3? [TBLM]Airamis77]: Well, I was never much of a FPS fan, mostly because I had only played single player. But eventually some buddies I worked with got me into playing Quake 2 towards the end of it's popularity. I played with them probably once every 2 weeks or so but it was deathmatch and I was horrible at it. When Quake 3 came out they talked me into buying it but I was the only one that actually liked the game, they stuck with Q2 and I moved on to Q3. A week after I started playing, I got involved in my 1st CTF game. There was nothing like the rush of playing with a team, everyone shouting orders and working together. No other game had ever given me that kinda fast paced excitement before so I was instantly hooked. I tried to join a few CTF clans but google failed me and probably the 1st 30 clan sites I looked up either didn't exist anymore or were far beyond my skill level. So I just decided it would be easier if I started my own clan. I was lucky enough to pick up some really great guys that were in the same boat as me and we've been playing together ever since. [BiTTeR_IvY]: Who, what, where, why, when, how.. conceived the idea for the BiCTF? [TBLM]Airamis77]: Alright, the tough question. A lot of what could be said about this would certainly offend a few people so I'll try to keep this answer as nice as possible. The idea for BICTF came up around the beginning of December 2002. TBLM was involved in a league that we had played in for about a year and had seen several admin changes. With each change the attitude of the league started shifting from "we're all here to have fun" to "Only the best teams matter". I know some may argue this point, but this is just the opinion of my team and a few other clans which I will leave outta this. After seeing many clans get the short end of the stick on some league matters I decided it was time to stop complaining and do something about it. I had a talk with bft|Dilireus about starting a new league and he was all for it, he had already been planning on starting a new league himself so we just merged the ideas. Then we beat bdi-dancingcow with a stick til he agreed to help out. We wanted a league that focused more on having fun then winning the championship. Dilireus got to work on the rules, I started working on the website, and I pulled my clan outta the other league. Once things were underway in the design aspect, my team suggested adding a CTFS (CaptureStrike) division, so we threw that in and sent out the word. [BiTTeR_IvY]: Who were the season 2 champs? [TBLM]Airamis77]: beginners discussion initiative (bdi) have won the last 2 seasons [BiTTeR_IvY]: Do you feel that there is a loss of interest in Quake 3? [TBLM]Airamis77]: Unfortunately I'm gonna have to say yes. Every month I hear of a clan that I've known for years breaking up or loosing all there long term members. I can't even remember the last time I played someone from a clan I've never heard of before. It's sad to watch it die, I truly love this game and the community that has formed because of it. I can only hope that Quake 4 gets here ASAP and that it isn't horrible. [BiTTeR_IvY]: What game are you most looking forward to? Quake 4 or Doom 3? [TBLM]Airamis77]: Defiantly Quake 4. I had the chance to play Doom 3 multiplayer a few times at QuakeCon and wasn't happy with what I saw. It has what it takes to be an incredible singleplayer game but as of right now, it's multiplayer is severely lacking. We're gonna have to rely on mod teams to make Doom 3 a popular multiplayer game. Of course they still have time to fix things, but I don't see it happening. So I have to put all my hopes into Quake 4, but with every report I hear, my faith slips a little. I pray that there not going to head down the road that UT2k3 did and rely on pretty graphics to sell games. I hear talks of slower straif jumping and vehicles and it scares me. Again, we'll probably have to rely on mod's to add some longevity to the game, but I guess that's the way it's always been. How many people still play Vanilla quake on a regular basis? Related Links:
