Sadistic Tyrants Clan Interview - MonteStyle & Cage Conducted by -beta ________________________________________________________________PROFILE
_____________________________________________________________INTERVIEW [MonteStyle]: Sadistic Tyrants has been around roughly 5 years, one of the oldest clans in RA today, and still going strong. We formed as SBA then soon changed its name to sT by two founders who aren't around anymore, sad to say =(. [Cage]: I have been with sT for about 3 years now. I was the co-leader of a clan named OCC (Offering Continuous Carnage) which was the #1 lithium clan for Q2. We tried to make the move from lithium to RA3, but we found that most of our members were not interested in playing Quake III at all. At that point, much of my gaming time was spent playing RA3 on Jade Garden's server where I first met Montestyle. He recruited me and introduced me to some of the active members at the time. I found sT to be exactly what I was looking for and since then I have been appointed co-leader of sT along side with Monte. We are one of the few clans that have been around since the early days of Quake 2 and we are one of the rare clans that have remained constant in our membership in Quake 3. We have recruited here and there since we took up RA3, but overall most of our old school members are still around and pop their heads into a server or irc from time to time. ```````````````````````````````````````` [LadyGamers]: Do you think RA3 should be an official tourney at QuakeCon? What makes it qualified to deserve that kind of attention? Will you be attending Quakecon 2004 even if RA3 doesn't make it into the events schedule next year? Would you compete in another mod in 2004 if that happens? [MonteStyle]: Definitly. RA3 should have a tourney at qcon, I know for a fact some of my members would go and compete in our name and do very well at that. [Cage]: Of course I'm biased in that this is my favorite game to play these days so of course I think that RA3 should be an official tourney at QCon. The problem that I see with this is that RA3 does not draw the big sponsors and the "crowd-drawing" prizes at all. All of the interest is either in TDM, Counter-Strike, or Unreal Tournament 2003. I do not think that RA3 will ever attract enough public interest to warrant a huge sponsor at QCon, which is unfortunate. RA3 has been around for over 3 years and we have less than 20 maps of which people only play 3 or 4 maps over and over. For the longest time we did not even have any support or any new releases to update the game which I also think hurt our chances. As for QCon 2004, I would like to attend. Assuming finances and all of that work themselves out, I would probably attend QCon 2004 even if there was not an official RA3 tourney. I know a bunch of people that play RA3 from the Central region (from my old Q2 days) so I think it would be a great time to be able to finally put a face to a name. ```````````````````````````````````````` [LadyGamers]: How has your clan been preparing for upcoming CAL matches? Do you have a set schedule of practices or just get on when you see others? [MonteStyle]: Throughout the CAL season we had scrims every night, sometimes three or four, even split up into two groups and had two scrims going; everyone was showing up and kicking ass which is two of my favorite things when it comes to my clan. [Cage]: When CAL first started we were scrimming at least two times a night. We would basically spam irc channels and take the first scrim that came along. We always tried to use our starting lineup even in scrims because we felt that it built trust, communication, synergy, and cohesiveness. As the CAL season progressed it was very apparent that our interest level was declining and we didn't scrim as much which I think hurt our chances when it came time for CAL playoffs. Overall, we had a very successful season going 9-0 in the regular season and obtaining the #2 seed in the playoffs. ```````````````````````````````````````` [LadyGamers]: Of all the RA3 focused clans out there what was it about the one you joined that attracted you the most? [MonteStyle]: To me its always been about respect. No one in our clan shit talks (unlike other "top" clans) and thats a big thing for me, to show up, play the match with no hassle, and dominate. I know I have one the most talented clans on the west coast and all I want is the best for my clan. This is why we joined CAL and did very well during the season and made it into the playoffs. [Cage]: This one is an easy question. The thing that drew me to sT over all other clans was the conversations that we had in our private irc channel. I clearly still remember some of the off the wall bashing sessions that we had against Monte 3 years ago. My main goal in joining an RA3 clan was not to be the #1 clan around. I mean, it is always nice to be a part of a clan that is well respected and known as one of the top clans around, but that was not the only determining factor in my decision. Above all else, this is just a game in the grand scheme of things and I wanted my experience to be laid back and fun yet still competitive. I also wanted to be in a clan that was going to stand the test of time. I did not want to join a clan and a year later have the clan disband and go their separate ways. I'm proud to say that we are still active and have many active members. I see sT being around for a very long time and playing many more games/mods in the very near future. A big reason we are still around is due to Montestyle. Monte may not know this but he is the glue that holds us together. He has been the leader for as long as I can remember and he's always been the person to diffuse interclan drama and to keep everyone's ego in check. I can just see Monte's fat head getting bigger and bigger after he reads this and I will probably never hear the end of it. ```````````````````````````````````````` [LadyGamers]: Do you think your clan has a chance of being the champion of your division in the CAL finals? If not, who do you think will be? [MonteStyle]: I definitely thought we had a shot. Like I said, we have one of the most talented teams out there. [Cage]: Even though sT is now knocked out of the tourney, I thought we had a very good chance at winning the finals for CAL. I think we were one of the top three or four clans that are still around, but unfortunately lady luck was not on our side this time. Now that we are out of the playoffs this year I think Inter Frag is by far the hands-down favorite to win the tourney. I have never seen LG's like I have seen whenever we scrim or play matches against Inter Frag. ```````````````````````````````````````` [LadyGamers]: Are there female players in your clan? If not, why not? Do they participate in CAL and the playoffs? [MonteStyle]: We have two female members in the clan (sorry both married), sT|Blondie and sT|Katana. Blondie I'm afraid is inactive at the moment, and Katana participates and organizes lots of our scrims to prepare for matches. [Cage]: sT|Katana and is the wife of sT|Pur!st. Kat is such a refreshing personality to have in our clan. She is one of my closest on-line buddies and it has been an absolute pleasure having her in sT. Unfortunately, Kat has not had the experience of playing in a lot of CAL matches or other matches in general. We have 5-7 people that we use in our clan matches and we try to stick with those folks in order to build a sense of communication and team work. We try to get in Kat, as well as some others, in as many scrims as we can. But with so many active members, it is very hard to juggle playing time while keeping everyone happy and feeling like they are integral part of the clan. I do not envy Monte as deciding who gets to play and who doesn't is usually his responsibility. ```````````````````````````````````````` [LadyGamers]: Have you ever fallen down in public? [MonteStyle]: Oh no doubt, almost everyday =( [Cage]: Negative ghost ride...the pattern is full. ````````````````````````````````````````
