Somewhere between wondering what to write, and sobering up
long enough to type it, I wondered briefly why DBs gave me
this column. An admittedly cynical response from me. I seem to
remember having a paranoia attack about it a day or so later
while I was waiting for Ted to sort my access out, but after
that brief lapse I came to the decision that regardless of his
motives, I`d try and write *sommit* that avoided my hang-ups
about a) men and b) the net, whilst getting the female gamers`
perspective across as DBs suggested. Still, spending a large
percentage of my online time being bombarded with such
examples of profound wit and intelligence as "you got big tits
155?" tends to leave it`s mark, so please excuse me if I sound
a little bitter at times…
I`d also love to avoid my obvious biases to Quake 2 and
Clan Unreal,
but with the amount of hits per day this news page receives
I`m gonna have to get those in somewhere.

And for the benefit of those of you still stuck with your
P60`s and your 2Mb 2D cards, I`ll mention my position as
channel op on #quake2.uk, (found on irc.barrysworld.com
surprisingly enough) sommit you won`t have bothered with
before cos you`re all stuck with that Q2 beta that is Qw.
J Consequently, most of my
involvement with BarrysWorld is through the channel and the
Quake 2 servers, so if you`re left wondering exactly who `Mr
Sli` and `Homi the pr0n master` are, that`s where you go to
find out…
I`d also point you at the
UKCCL, Savage
CTF League and
UKCL web pages as these are our three main leagues, and
their board rooms contain much of the bitching I`ll be writing
about. (So you can bypass my drival and find out what`s going
on yourself J)
Plugging the superior gender`s online efforts, (yeah,
right) here is the
Quake Womans Forum and the exquisite
GameGirlz site. Be
humble, these girls were nailing men into the ground long
before you learnt what +mlook was for.
So, time I got on with it I guess… And what thrilling
events have rocked our little Q`ummunity this week?
Lol, um… Well the isp`s sorted. Some would say `finally`
after that but then those are probably the same people who
join match servers whining that X admin hasn`t got X dmflag
set yet and forget it`s all very much free and happens at the
expense and effort of other people. But at least now the
somewhat variable server conditions won`t be worsened by
having to use commercial ISPs that were set up with the word
`saturated` rather than `reliable` in mind. And now with
matches regularly coming down to nail-bitingly close
conclusions, sometimes as close as a single frag, (Yes Witz,
we know you won, but I think the others made their point the
second time round don`t you? J)
the bonus of actually being able to see half the rounds you
fire will ease tensions somewhat.
Having quizzed DBs a couple of times about how the network
is set up and having read a response Zoid (pie eater general
that he is) wrote in reply to a question about rate capping
and client maxfps, it`s become very clear that BarrysWorld can
do very little to make match conditions any better, and I
strongly suggest some of the people criticizing the ISP for
poor server quality to shut the f**k up as they have no idea
what they`re talking about. Life would be great if we all had
ASDL and equal machine set-up, but as we don't we'll have to
do with the best we can get, and right now, we're getting
that.
Looking forward, and with Quakeadelica very much in the
past and over-cooked in the online media microwave, the next
`big thing` will definitely be `The
Frenzy` this coming Christmas, gladly avoiding Wireplay as
much as possible and getting some real personalities in for
the duration. J (No disrespect
meant to Bill and the others who bridged the gap for that shot
at Fong and his dual PII fueled ego…nice work guys) With
pretty much the whole of the top UKCCL divisions turning up,
it'll be nice to see the UK gaining some attention for what
has previously been a US fad, aka the PQ Beatdown lan party…
Expect to find tankers outside to mop up the oceans of
testosterone that`ll flow during what could be some of the
fearcest grudge matches since the RSC versus UKF saga, and I`m
willing to bet money on there being at least one punch up
J Being female, I`d love to say
I were above egos and pride, and all the other typically male
faults that under-pin what it is to be a clannie, but if I go
I`ll be the first to deck someone for slating UNR.

Another `next big thing` that has been seeing a lot of the
headlines lately has been Quake3:Arena. Which scared me
senseless when it made me realize it's almost a year since I
fired off my first rail on those extremely dodgy 3.06 servers
last December. Could it really be that everything will start
again so soon? And if so, who apart from Mr SLi and Mrs Sli
will have a machine capable of running it?

Speaking of new games, I found myself very much amused by
the 2nd generation keys used by the CD version of
Half Life, making it impossible for most warez clients to
connect using the original key generator included in the zip.
That'll teach you to jump the gun you warez f00ls ;-) But
then, prematurely is man's biggest flaw. ;-)
Thought for the week: If Quake 2`s so lame Paul, wtf are
you doing spending so much time in our channel? Oh, and how
come you figured out Exor was a twat so quickly? ;-) (Didn't
mean it Exor, you're lovely really…you just need to get laid
before I go anywhere near you at Frenzy
