HELLO out there! How are all my loyal gameDiva followers doing? Have
all of you gone out and grabbed the most recent issue of Play
Magazine yet? It is a must have! Well, this week we are interviewing
a fabulous lady by the name of Cathy Lu who works over at MacAddict
Magazine. Now, we haven't' written a lot about Mac's in the past, so
here is a treat to all you Mac users. You all haven't been forgotten
=).
Without further delay, I am proud to present you
Cathy "Addicted to the Mac" Lu.
gameDiva- Who are you?
Cathy Lu - "I am executive editor here at MacAddict magazine."
gameDiva- What do you do?
Cathy Lu - I am in charge of the features section of MacAddict and I
also help
the editor-in-chief implement the vision of the magazine.
gameDiva- Who do you write for?
Cathy Lu - Besides MacAddict, I have written for a number of
publications in the
past. These included: DailyRadar.com, WebMD, Infoworld, and Games
Business.
gameDiva- How did you get into writing about video games?
Cathy Lu - I first started writing about games when I worked at
MacHome Journal
Magazine about five years ago. There I covered Mac games and
educational software. I then became managing editor of Next
Generation magazine, where I wrote some news, reviews, and previews.
gameDiva- What is your favorite stuff to write about?
Cathy Lu - I like interviewing people and writing profiles. I also
like
researching, analyzing, and writing about trends.
gameDiva- What is your favorite video game?
Cathy Lu - A few of my favorites are: The Sims, Tony Hawk 2, Tetris,
You Don't
Know Jack, Bushido Blade, and Pac-Man.
gameDiva- What is your favorite kind of accessory?
Cathy Lu - A gamepad for certain games (like Tony Hawk).
gameDiva- Who is the best looking video game character out
there?
Cathy Lu - I like Rayman and Spyro the dragon. They're very cute!
gameDiva- What is the first system you ever owned? First game?
Cathy Lu - Apple IIe. I used to play Breakout and Vocabulary
Baseball on it. I
never owned an Atari system but used to play all the time at my aunt
and uncle's house. I also played Space Invaders, Pitfall, Asteroids,
and Pac-Man.
gameDiva- What is the craziest thing you've ever had to do to
get a review?
Cathy Lu - I don't think I've ever done anything crazy!
(note from the gameDiva: Hmmm..nothing crazy? I don't believe it for
a second)
gameDiva- What is your favorite thing about writing about
video games?
Cathy Lu - That you get to spend hours and hours and hours of WORK
time to play games!
gameDiva- Would you ever dress like Lara Croft in public?
Cathy Lu - I don't think that I'm well-enough-equipped to dress like
Lara Croft.
Nor do I have short enough shorts.
(note from the diva: do they even make shorts that short?)
gameDiva- What advice do you have for people who want to write
about video games/high tech in the future?
Cathy Lu - The most successful game journalists are those who are
great writers
and editors and know their stuff. Believe it or not, that's
a rare combination to find. There are plenty of great writers but
they have to learn the industry. There are plenty of people who play
games for 40 hours a week and would like nothing better than to work
for a videogame magazine or website--yet they are not very good
writers. To have both skills would get you very far.
gameDiva- What video game would you most like to see turned
into a movie? What about a movie turned into a video game?
Cathy Lu - Movie turned videogame--hmmm, Crouching Tiger Hidden
Dragon might
make a good videogame.
Videogame turned movie--Movies based on videogames always seem
extremely lame. I can't really think of any games that have such a
compelling storyline that it would make a great movie.
gameDiva- What was your proudest video game win ever?
Cathy Lu - Slashing my co-worker down in Bushido Blade, especially
because he
was much better than me. He says he let me win, but I'll just
continue to believe that it was my skill that took him down.
(note: I have no doubt it was Cathy's incredible woman gamer
skill that led her to this victory! WOOHOO)
Another exceptional journalist to inspire us girl gamers and future
writers out there! Thanks Cathy for coming out and being profiled!
If anyone out there has any additional questions for Cathy, feel
free to drop me an email and I will pass it on!
Now, for all of you who read last weeks' profile,
you may remember our interview with Andrea, a fellow girl gamer.
Andrea told us that one Halloween she dressed up as a toned-down
version of Lara Croft and after some within-interview begging she
finally sent me the picture. So I'm putting it up for you all to
see. So here you go…enjoy!
That is all I have for you gals this week. C'mon back next week,
we will be talking to someone working in the video games industry!
