Aurora Interview by Adriana 'BostonChick' Brown "I love UT, I love UT!" The words echo on. There I was, sitting calmly in an IRC channel and in comes Vangie 'Aurora' Beal of GameGirlz spouting her love for the new demo Unreal Tournament. She had just downloaded and played the first person shooter by Epic Games. I have seen Vangie rant and rave in the past about many games, but nothing like this. Quake had brought this talented woman into the world of gaming and I wondered what would happen between her and the love she once had for Quake and the new romance she had found in this shooter. [BostonChick]: How long have you been playing Quake (x)? [Aurora]: Hrm... since June 1996 I believe. [BostonChick]: Has the transition from Q1 to Q2 to Q3 been smooth for you (as in can you move on to the next version and still love the game?) [Aurora]: Well, moving from Quake to Quake II, I found really easy. I went from one to the other without any problem at all. The move to Quake 3 (q3test) sadly was too difficult for me to make the change. Going from playing an intense realistic shooter to (in my opinion) a large cartoon world where everyone and everything bounces around and has this overwhelming use of circles isn't an easy adjustment to make. :) [BostonChick]: What were your thoughts on Q3A test when it came out? [Aurora]: Well, it was good. I mean the game itself rocks, but that depends on what you look for in a shooter. For me I want intense playing, not fun "bouncy-bouncy" gaming. The graphics and characters looked kick-ass, although I felt the weapon balance was a little off. It just didn't seem to feel right holding a RL in Quake 3 for me. With Doom, Quake, and Quake II.. I'd sit at my computer and *feel* like I was playing an id game. I don't get that comfy reliable feeling with Q3test. [BostonChick]: What are your thoughts on Q3A test now that UT has been released in Demo? [Aurora]: Q what? No I'm kidding. Since having played the UT demo, I haven't actually been playing Q3 test at all. I find UT a more enjoyable game experience, in all honesty. [BostonChick]: Why is it that you would choose not to play Q3A now that UT is out? [Aurora]: In many areas, UT really has more to offer than what I see with the two demos. In UT we have automatic stats logging. I'm not a total fan of Deathmatch, and with the UT demo I have several game types to choose from (mmm.. CTF and Domination). UT also runs a LOT faster on my computer than Q3 test does. In a game of Q3 my lag isn't lag... it's the game chunking out due to a slower (ok, really old) processor. In UT, I don't have this problem at all. I also feel UT really is more team oriented than Quake 3 is, and that's what I enjoy the most, team game play. With the UT demo, I can find one friend to play a game, we can toss in 6 bots and have an intense team game going.. the UT bots just plain rock. I also really like the voice-overs and the amount of voice commands and options you have in UT. It makes the game seem faster, and more fun. I know q3 test is just that... a *test*. But UT is a demo and offers so much more variety and options than the q3test does. [BostonChick]: Is there anything that Q3A could do for you that would bring you back from UT? [Aurora]: Heh, work decently on my junky old computer? Load maps faster and lose a tad bit of the cartoon world look. I will admit though, while I do favor the UT demo over the Q3 demo for playing... I can't say I know I'll like UT better than Q3 for sure until I see the retail versions and see what else Q3 has to offer other than what we see in the current test release. [BostonChick]: Which do you think would be released first... Q3A or UT? [Aurora]: I hope Quake 3 so that I'll have to buy the retail version and give it a *fair* try before UT gets released and sucks my life away :) [BostonChick]: If they were released in the stores the same day would you buy UT first then come back another time for Q3A or would you purchase both or not get Q3A at all? [Aurora]: I would say, based on what I have seen from Q3test and the UT demo, I would choose UT over Q3 simply because the UT demo offers more of a "sneak peek", and I'd be very confident I'd be making a purchase I'd be happy with. The Q3 test doesn't show me enough to know I'd be completely happy with buying the retail version of it. [BostonChick]: What are your fav parts about UT? [Aurora]: Basically, the weapons rock, and the many different team/game types is what rates the demo so high in my books!
