FFF'99 Player Interview - Meet VAIO

August 1, 1999

Thirty-five year old Robin Gomboy (aka VAIO) from West Palm Beach, Florida  is pretty new to the FPS genre of games. For the FFF event, she is fragging her way through the HPB East division on her 56k modem! Living on a boat without electricity and a phone shows this lady can deal with just about anything tossed her way!

[FFF.com] How long have you been playing id Software games ?
[VAIO]: I haven't been playing ID games long enough...maybe a year if that....but I love them now and won't stop playing them...I used to play games like 7th  Guest, Realms of the Haunting, and any other puzzle game till I found ID.....

[FFF.com] If you could change any one thing in Quake II, or add something what would it be?
[VAIO]: Really I have to say none at this point..I haven't been playing long enough  to even know where the mega health is on DM3 Fragpipe...I discovered it by watching demos from some of the other girls..sad huh?

[FFF.com] What other games do you play?
[VAIO]: Well, now I play just about any FPS...I really enjoy playing Unreal and Unreal return to Napali because the graphics are so awesome...I'll cruise through Unreal in  easy mode just to look at the architecture of the game, it is so beautiful, but for game play I turn to Quake 2 now, also Halflife and Quake 3 Arena..

I can't wait till Q3 comes out ....Oh and I sometimes (when I have 6 or 7 hours to kill) play Warzone 2100 with my hubby and his friends

[FFF.com] I've heard an interesting story about you being kind of "Adventure girl on  the high sea". Want to share your experiences of living on a sailboat?
[VAIO]: Ahh...the simple life...My husband and I bought an old wooden sailboat  shortly after we both met and realized that we both had the same dream..that  dream was to live and travel on a sailboat. So we bought our boat about 8 years ago worked on it for about 6 months to get it livable (not what most  people call livable) and since then we have lived on her and restored her  while doing so. For the first year we didn't even have electricity...and for 7 years we had no phone...ahhh to not be bothered by the phone....we did travel  a bit but the storms scared us too bad and we stick close to shore now..but we did go to the Bahamas for a while and even made it to the Virgin Islands.

Now that we are starting our own Internet Cafe we have so little time for the boat that she is now in overhaul and out of the water...our 1936 Block Island  Schooner will travel again in the near future but for now she needs a break   from the water as do we....

[FFF.com] Are you in a Quake Clan?
[VAIO]: I have no clan affiliations at this time, but since being in this tourney I have to say that I love the camaraderie of the girls and gaming. So now I will be looking into joining a clan. Anyone know of any in the Florida area?

[FFF.com] What do you enjoy most about playing Quake II?
[VAIO]: I might say the adrenaline rush...I love that feel because it reminds me of  the feelings I would get in the middle of a big storm on the boat...only in  Quake 2. I am not actually taking my life in my hands like on the boat in a storm.....

[FFF.com] What is your favorite MOD?
[VAIO]: Until this tourney I hadn't even heard of a mod...so I can't actually answer  that question....cause I haven't tried any except deathmatch, but I like deathmatch....

[FFF.com] Who is the toughest opponent you've faced so far in the event?
[VAIO]: MsDead....she kicked my butt...and taught me a few things too...she even agreed to let me be her Grasshopper...tee hee

[FFF.com] Why did you decide to join the FFF'99?
[VAIO]: My hubby was surfing on the web and ran across mention of the tourney on AGN,  I followed the links and said "what the hell, I'll give it a try" and here I am meeting some really cool ladies and making friends...

[FFF.com] So far, what do you think of the tourney? Is it what you expected it to be?
[VAIO]: I'm loving the tourney...I know I'm new to the game and have a lot to learn  (like where the mega health is on all the maps, dah) but this is really fun and through the tourney I have acquired some new friends and that is the best part...

[FFF.com] What do you think your chances are of making it to the finals?
[VAIO]: LOL...ROFL..you gotta be kidding..I'm lucky I made it this far...

[FFF.com] Any words of wisdom you'd like to share with other FFF'99 players?
[VAIO]: Words of wisdom? Ummmm....my dad used to say  "Life is not a game"   but I beg  to differ with him....Life is a game so you need to enjoy it as much as possible and only do the things that make you happy....cause in the end the things you remember are the things that made you happy...and always follow your dreams....
