Having played Quake and
skipped on Quake 2, Michelle 'kittenin' DeMarr is winding up
with Quake 3 and plans on participating in the GameGirlz / CPL
all-female tournament. Previously Michelle has played in other
tournaments; Quakecon99, Quakecon2000 and many local tourneys in
Houston. We recently spoke with Michelle to find out what she is
up to when not playing games, her views on tournaments, and much
more!
Where did you come up
with the nickname 'kittenin'?
I actually came up with the nick "kittenin" back
when I was signing up for dwango
to play some good old doom2. I love kittens and I love Nine
Inch Nails (an awesome band that
uses the abbreviation "nin"). So I wanted kittennin, but dwango only let users have 8
character names so I chose kittenin and just took out an n. Besides I think it looks
better without that extra n
anyway.
Are you presently
playing any games other than Quake 3?
Not really, I mostly spend all my
free time playing Quake3, every once in a while you might catch me playing Quake1, or
maybe some Doom2.
What were your
thoughts when you played Quake 3 for the first time? Did
you know right away this was a game you'd
continue playing?
To be honest when I first played
Quake3 I thought it was a little too happy, and way better than Quake2. It had brighter,
happier colors and the gameplay
felt completely different than Quake1. (I skipped over
Quake2 because I didn't like the
way it played.) After a little getting used to, I knew that this was the next Quake for
me.
Have you played
in any tourneys before? How do you think you'll do in the
GameGirlz / CPL
event?
Yes, I have been to Quakecon99 and
Quakecon2000 and many local tourneys here in Houston. The Gib-O-Rama
being a major one that I attend regularly. I hope I will do
well, but I haven't had as much
time to practice as I would like
have to had. But you never know, I still have a month left. :)
What are your
personal views on 'all-female' tournaments? What made you
decide to join this
one?
I think female tournaments let
females know that there are other females out there that play quake. I find tournaments a
great challenge and I think it's
a great chance to show myself how much I have improved since the
last tournament I played
in.
How old are you,
and what do you do when you're not playing Quake
3?
I'm 19 and when I'm not playing
Quake3 I generally am either sleeping, studying, or working.
How seriously do
you take gaming? Does practicing and playing take up a lot of your
free time?
I wouldn't say I take gaming too
seriously. Practicing and playing does take up most of my free time, when I have some, that's
actually pretty rare though.
What is your favorite
Quake 3 map (and why)?
My favorite map right now is
q3dm6(tmp), for its level design and game play. But when ztn puts out Painkiller (ztndm5) for
Quake3, that will most likely be
my favorite map. It was my favorite map in Quake1 and I'm sure
it will rock Quake3.
When you're not
gaming or online, what sorts of things do you enjoy
doing?
When I actually have free time that
I'm not using for practicing, I enjoy programming. I'm currently pursuing a Computer Science
Degree at a local college.
If you were to
win this tournament, what would you do with the prize money?
I would actually use the prize money
to pay the costs of the trip up to Dallas, and if I had any left over I would either save it
or pay some bills with it.
