TheGirl Interview By Archfiend I did an interview with "TheGirl". She came out of nowhere to finish 4th in the women's KBK tournament in Korea. We talked about the KBK tournament, Shopping with Grrrrr, and her Power Zerg strats. Editor's Note: A few things we should note before we get into the interview. I was interested in interviewing TheGirl simply based on the fact that she was obviously an outstanding player, she's female, and she was basically unknown. I ran across her posting on the Tao-of-Gaming forums There was some fuss going on concerning a funny picture of Thor, Maynard, and Grrrrrr in bed with a box of condoms but I wasn't paying a lot of attention (**foreshadowing**). I hooked up with TheGirl in ICQ chat and before the chat started we had this little snippet of conversation: TheGirl: Wait...real quick...have you heard anything about me and Grr? Archfiend: No. TheGirl: Ok, good. Archfiend: But I will make sure to ask about it in the interview (= TheGirl: Ok, you do that so I can clear things up with ppl and rumors. TheGirl: Jennifer ,18, Dallas, TX, USA Archfiend: How long have you been playing StarCraft? TheGirl: Hmmm between 6-8 months. Not very long. Seriously playing about 2-5 months. I like those games so much! Archfiend:My God, that's how long I've been playing and I suck =( I'm going to cry..... TheGirl: Well I suck too. We can both suck together. T_T Archfiend:Hahaha, I will edit that out before the pre-pubescent perverts read it (= (**Editor's note, changed my mind..lol**) TheGirl: Oh yah, kaka (**Editor's note: kaka ='s haha in Korean apparently**) Archfiend:So tell people who are unfamiliar with you some of your Starcraft accomplishments including well known StarCraft players you've defeated.. TheGirl: I dunno. -_- Like I did this KBK thing and got 4th. I was pissed off too because the #1 girl sucked. It's just that I had like 50 camera men taking pictures during my game and 10000 people watching my side and some guy asking me interview questions during it. but it was cricket quiet on her side of the board. I think I played like 60% of my caliber when I lost to her. She doesn't even get psi... Archfiend:You've also beaten some elite players 1 on 1 that people have heard of as well right? TheGirl: As for SC players I've defeated, I play only 1on 1. I suck at team play. I've beaten Thor 1 on 1 and [b&G]theBOy 1 on 1 like 3 times. Archfiend: Now for someone who has only been playing that amount of time how have you improved so far, so fast? TheGirl: Yeah, well I played with Maynard for like 1 month straight and just 1v1's and he helped me the most. I increased my skill level really fast within days. But I still suck. Archfiend: You keep saying how much you suck when you are taking home prize money in tournaments... TheGirl: Prize money? I lost 400 dollars us to a 4 pooler. I went 12 pool..... that angers me. Archfiend: In the championship the winner 4 pooled? You are kidding me? TheGirl: No there was a battle between 3rd and 4th. The 3rd placer 4 pooled me, so she was lucky. Archfiend: So how did you end up getting involved in KBK? TheGirl: I signed up.... I learned about a women's competition. I played Aaron, like the director or something, I don't know his title. He had confidence in me and then I went there. Well ppl thought that I was going to get eliminated first round. Well...I didn't. Then they thought I was going to get eliminated next round, and I didn't. But then they thought I was going to win because I passed that one pro-gamer girl ^^. She's a good player [ace]queen. But then I had too many distractions and the funky Korean mouse... so I couldn't concentrate. I think that they should've had no cameras or ppl all over me during my game. They did a good job of keeping ppl away from her side tho perhaps because I'm foreign. Oh well. Archfiend:How was the tournament when you arrived? Some people were complaining that foreigners were treated badly compared to the hometown players? True in your opinion or not? TheGirl: No way! If anything. us foreigners were most respected! Except on stage with the funny man... Archfiend:What does "except on stage with the funny man" mean? TheGirl: KBK took us out to dinner and gave us place to stay that wasn't like a hole in the wall, convenient transportation..they were super nice to us and ppl were rooting us on to win the competition! OMG the funny man experience? That was the absolutely the most memorable thing in my LIFE! Ok I'll start from the beginning..He called us foreigners on stage. Maynard and Pillars were too smart to come up on stage. They made us say things in Korean. It was so embarrasing. Grrrr did the best tho. He's so Koreanized. He made us dance like fools and Grrr was "so responsive" to one of the group acts we had to do. Then like on the stage Grrr goes "JENNIPA, bbo bbo jo say yo" < I dont know how to spell it> that means "Jennifer kiss me plz" so I did and like you hear this huge "WAAAA" from the Korean crowd and then claps. OMG he really made fun of us. Archfiend: So you and GRRR were making out in public...
TheGirl: Hmm...not making out.. I kissed him on the cheek, that's it. Archfiend:Everyone says Grrr is a ladies man... TheGirl: Hmmm...well, he's a very nice gentleman. He's so sweet. Archfiend:So Grrrr would always be welcome to visit down Dallas way (= TheGirl: He was the sweetest guy there, esp to me. Of course! I'll pay too. ^_^ Archfiend:Lol....well that will certainly put all possible rumors about u and Grrr to rest for good (=[ TheGirl: OMG, ok...lets try that again. Archfiend: lolololololololololol TheGirl: We dated for like a week and a half. Is that better? TheGirl: He was a shoulder to cry on, and shoulder to laugh on, a shoulder to ponder, and a great, great friend. Always trying to make me smile and he really respected my fashion sense! I cant believe he went shopping with me it must've been grueling for him T_T. Archfiend:

must have really blown him away if he went shopping with you. Archfiend: He actually tried stuff on? Really? You must look like a super model. TheGirl: HAH I wish... I'm not.. I have REALLY bad pics, and really good pics, super models only have good pics. Archfiend: Nah....they smudge make up and get rained on too (= TheGirl: Heh... Archfiend: Enough about your torrid affair with Grrrrr. TheGirl: Ok.....Yes I agree. Archfiend: I was j/k that was really good material (= So tell us a little about what you do outside of StarCraft? College, Athletics, anything like that? TheGirl: College yes, I go to Rice... went to Rice... going to UT Austin... or just UT... very indecisive now. I'm majoring in physics. I'm doing junior level stuff. But I think I'm going to double major in business because I know you can't get anything outta physics. Its just my passion. I do northern Kungfu//Wushu. I play the piano, clarinet, violin, viola and compete in all of these instruments and sports. Also, I work on cars *imports only* and I modify them. Archfiend: Do you think your martial arts background may have given you the quick hands to be effective at StarCraft? TheGirl: Maybe my piano.....I played piano for like 14 years Archfiend: You are well rounded. TheGirl: Thanx. Archfiend: So what are your current plans SC wise? More Tournaments? TheGirl: Yes, more tourneys and in Korea esp. Archfiend: Lol.....you are a dream girl, an educated physics major, who likes martial arts, cars, and computer games..lol TheGirl: Haha.... I guess that's what they think. But I'm also high maintenance, fashion and shopping are my weaknesses. Archfiend: Ah..I forgot the shopping... TheGirl: Ask Grrrr.... there was so much..OMG..Grrrr buy me this that this that this that. He's really good at saying no tho T_T Archfiend: Haha...So what race do you prefer to play? TheGirl: Zerg Archfiend: Are you a Zerg specialist or are you also as strong with either of the other races? TheGirl: KAKA. I suck with Toss and Terran Archfiend: Why so? Just don't have the same feel for them? TheGirl: Well I dunno. I think Zerg is "faster" I don't know how to describe it. I like going "SDSDSDSD" and getting 10000 drones to come up. Archfiend: So as a Zerg specialist what are some favorite strats that you like besides the standard mass hydras, mass mutes? TheGirl: I just spread my units out in the middle vs Toss. I do Lurker vs Terran and in Zerg vs. Zerg if I'm playing a Korean I go fast Mutas and vs. an American I go many Lings or Hydra after Mutie. I like that wicked 1 sunken that stops like 8 zealots. Maynard taught me. Mass Hydra is cool. Oh and I upgrade them.... Archfiend: So you are a straight out mass production player....tell us about the 1 sunken that stops 8 zeals... TheGirl: O_o Archfiend: =[ TheGirl: Mass production? Hmmm not vs. Koreans. Koreans are so good at Zerg vs. Zerg I think, you just have to be faster. Only vs. Americans do I go so many multis (**Editor's note: multi ='s expansions**) . Oh and everyone knows that sunken thing. I'm just like so chobo that I never knew it. Like the sunken in your minerals at your expansion rather than outside your expansion. I have the 3rd hatch in the way like next to your multi. Have drones block at sunken and Zealots are too stupid so they die. Drones are killers ya know....^_____^ Archfiend: So you actually place the sunken in your mineral line and have drones swarm round it when the Zellies come? TheGirl: Ya...if the player doesn't kill the drones... then they Zeals automatically go for the sunken. Archfiend: So strategy wise you just basically go either for the quick early kill or the power game and run over them... TheGirl:Yes... Archfiend: What about vs. Terran bunkering you in? TheGirl: I use many lings.....hmmm they bunker me in? Never had it happen. They've tried. Archfiend: What about Marine/Medic rush? TheGirl: Lurkers. Archfiend: What if they get there before Lurkers? TheGirl: Fast Lurkers...they don't..I haven't encountered that yet.. Archfiend:
Lol...okies...what about mid game vs. Toss....Templar, Goon, Reaver
combos?
Archfiend: What about Terran pushing tank pushing hard with Tanks, Gols, Marines and Multi Sci vessels? TheGirl: If my Lurkers don't stop Terrans in early game then I have a problem. Tillerman I think has a nice Terran. Sci vessels are hard, I hate irradiate! But Tanks and Gols... spread out the Hydra. I go Lurker/Hydra... but it's hard... Archfiend: Do you ever use Queens or Defilers? TheGirl: Heh. I haven't gone to lair in a while... T_T Archfiend: So you don't use Guards, Defilers, Ultras, Devourers, etc? What if Toss gets to late game and gets to Carrier and Corsair combo? TheGirl: Then I'm dead. I'm stupid for letting Toss get Corsairs and Carriers. Archfiend: Lol...Well if you never go Guards or Dark swarm how do you bust through heavily defended areas? Just raw mass? I mean if I get a bunkered in Terran with Tanks, Bunkers, Detectors, Marines. How do you bust in? Or Toss with let's say Reavers, Storm, Cannons, Goons, etc TheGirl: I've never gotten bunkered in b4. Because I'll have
Lings or something. It's all unit control really. TheGirl: HAH, it has happened to me before. [B&G]TheBOy did that to me. He's good. I had so many Hydra tho... and just micro'd my units.. I'm not saying that this works vs Maynard or something but.....I never have my Hydra at a choke....I have them at like 12 different points in the middle of the map...you're likely to catch them coming down if you scout well then you send in your units to attack all the way around. Pillars, Grrr and Maynard are really good and of course still own me. Archfiend: Don't feel bad, those 3 own basically everybody..So what if they start coming with a mass death march right up the middle don't they kill your groups of hydras piecemeal instead of in a clump? TheGirl: So many Hydra so many expansions. Just like out
expand the Toss...T_T Grrr ownz me... TheGirl: Ahh kaka, dang rumors... TheGirl and Grr picture ---> Archfiend: Okies..now u said u go Hydra vs. Americans.. TheGirl: -_- ..... I mean like OK... lots of Americans I know do that weird early expansion thing with like 10000 expansions right after that. Now of course some do fast Mutas. I know Koreans do fast Mutas like always. You just kinda have to know ya kno? I like to go Hydra vs Terran or Toss of couse. Archfiend: So you don't like to do a hatch on 11 or 13 at expansion with Zerg? TheGirl: Only vs Toss or if i know that a player always goes early multi. I like fast Mutas tho. Its so nice. Archfiend: Lol...that sounds almost loving "Fast muties are so nice" TheGirl: Fast mutas own... TheGirl: Well I think playing with a well rounded group of good players helped me. I played with some of the TOP Korean players and the top American players and they were so adamant about getting me trained so I could win the competition. I trained for like 1.5 months with them like constant 1v1's and they told me what I needed to work on. Unit control and stuff and just knowing what to do vs. a certain attack. Archfiend: Anything you'd like to promote? Any people you'd like to give shout outs too? TheGirl: Ahhh...I wanna promote the )dl( proteam. They own. I think October ownz and of course to my number one babe in all the land: X'ds~grrrr...then Maynard and Thor and Pillars. They're like big bros to me.
